Classic film ‘Viento Negro”

image

Rocky Point regulars know – every once in a while, a strong wind will blow into town and stay for a few days. A famous film from the Mexican Cinema is set in one of these storms, out in the dunes of the Pinacate Biosphere reserve.

‘Viento Negro’, or Black Wind, was made in 1964 and tells it’s story around true events that happened during the construction of the railway that connected the State of Baja California with the rest of Mexico.

As part of National Conservation Week (October 27th through 31st), the Cine Club of Puerto Penasco presents the film during  its’ regular Tuesday night event, CineMartes. Every week, the patio of Puerto Viejo Coffee shop finds a gathering of film buffs, as well as those who like to enjoy a pleasant outside event while the weather is so nice.

Admission is free, and the film starts at 8:30pm. Puerto Viejo is located in the Old Port, one block off of the Malecon on Calle Zaragoza, across from the main church.

Pinata Regatta

Hobie Cat lovers got together this past weekend for the 14th Pinata Regatta. Rocky Point cooperated with it’s usual awesome warm and sunny weather.

Two times a year, fleets from Tucson and Phoenix get together to do what they love, based out of the Playa Bonita RV Resort. As always, the event delivers a beautiful splash of colors to the waters of Rocky Point.

Congratulations to champions and Puerto Peñasco regulars Heather and Brian Heffernan.

Expanded lineup for Peacemakers Show

image

It is shaping up to be a mini Circus Mexicus come October 10th, 11th, and 12th. Banditos Bar is the default home base for Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers when they are in Rocky Point. Originally scheduled to perform at a festival here that never quite got off the ground, the group decided to come and play anyway.

Saturdays RCPM performance has been sold out for a while now. But come on down because the on off show has become a weekend full of music.

Friday night sees Marc Norman and Ghetto Cowgirl take the Banditos stage. This group made a big impact at the last Circus Mexicus. And finally, Peacemakers guitarist Jim Dalton hosts a Sunday brunch/after party to round out the weeekend.

This is the only schedueld Peacemakers event in Rocky Point before January, so come and enjoy the near perfect weather while listening to some of Arizonas best loved musicians.

Beach Bocce Ball in Las Conchas

Just another beautiful day in Las Conchas.

Just another beautiful day in Las Conchas.

Concentrate. Be the ball. Feel its’ weight as you hold it, ready to throw. All eyes are on you (OK, there are only six eyes total, everyone else is over at the beer tent). You wind up, swing your arm forward and release.

The bocce ball sails through the air, heading for the the other ones sitting in a clump just a few feet from the lazy ocean waves. If it lands where I want it to, it will nudge the other guys ball aside and I will have the points to win. If not, well there’s always the beer tent.

I can’t watch!

Bocce Ball is is a game that goes back to the Romans. Two teams try to get their balls closest to the target. Usually played on grass, this coming October 4th marks the return of the Las Conchas Beach Bocce Ball Tournament.

Get your friends together and make your own team, and spend the afternoon on the beach at beautiful Las Conchas. On the east side of Rocky Point, Las Conchas is mostly houses instead of Sandy Beach’s condo towers, and has a more ‘get away from it all’ feeling as well. Seaside Reservations can help you book your stay here.

The Community Relations Comittee of Las Conchas sponsors the event, with proceeds going to the many local charities that they support. Food and drink will be available to help you enjoy a lazy day at the beach with good friends.

Opening my eyes, I squint into the setting sun. Where’s my ball? Did it bury so deep in the sand that I can’t see it? Did I win?

I look towards the ‘crowd’. Not over there. Could it be? Scanning the shore, I catch the last glimpse of the red ball as it rolls into the foam of the Sea of Cortez. Oh well, like they say, you are only competing against yourself. Stupid ball!

The Las Conchas Beach Bocce Ball Event happens October 4th, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. You can get directions at the main gate to Las Conchas.

Chevefest 2014

image

‘Cheve’ is short for Chevesa. Thats how you say cervesa when you are drunk (borracho). Not that you have to be borracho to attend the First Annual Chevefest. It might be better to stay sober so that the enjoyment of the different beers offered at El Tapeo can really be savored. For sure this will be a good time for those that love having a tasty beer in a nice setting.

El Tapeo is a place known for it’s selection of wines, cheeses, appetizers served Spanish style (Tapas), as well as specialty beers. Most of these share a common origin in Northern Baja Mexico. Mexicali, Tijuana, and the Valle Guadalupe area of vineyards outside of Ensenada are represented on the menu, and at the Festival.

But what’s a festival without music? Right now, the exact line up has yet to be announced, but the mix looks to be rock oriented. Which sounds about right for a beer festival. I mean, Jazz and beer? No way.

Chevefest Rocky Point 2014 is coming to Rocky Point October 11th to El Tapeo Wine Bar, located next to Hotel Laos Mar behind Playa Bonita Resort. The cover is $200 pesos, with a beer tasting from 7:30pm to 8:30pm.                            by Richard Scott
