Rocky Points’ latest landmark.

New fish in town . . .

Probably most driving directions you get in Rocky Point from now on will include “turn ( left / right / straight ) at the big fish.” The new sculpture at the entrance to Calle 13 is just that, a Marlin that points to one of the busiest tourist centers in town.
If Rocky Point is about one thing, it is Shrimp.  We already have two statues that ‘show the love’ to this humble crustacean. Why this fish and why here?
At one time, this was the turn to Playa Hermosa. The beach and hotel there were the ‘resort’ area for Rocky Point, years before Sandy Beach was more than, well, a sandy beach.
A sign at this intersection directed you out to Playa Hermosa, which had a drawing of a fish. ‘El Pescado’ (the Fish) was a landmark known and used by everyone in town.

New Species in Rocky Point beaches

By Maria Olguin

Many tourists might be asking themselves why there has been so many different species by shore recently. Such as the jelly fish, a type of jellyfish that hasn’t been seen here in Rocky Point. We all know that this has always been a very productive region, but lately It has been even more. So I personally gathered some information from the CEDO here in Rocky Point. CEDO means “Centro de estudios de Desierto y Oceano”, which means INTERCULTURAL CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF DESERTS AND OCEANS. Whom there I spoke with biologists Paloma Valdivia and Caroline Dowton

Asked them about these new jellyfish, that many people have been seeing lately. They are much bigger and also have a different color. A sort of brownish color.(As you can see in the picture below). They are not sure yet what type of species or if it is poisonous  but they are researching and working with an expert in jellyfish. My question was why has there been so many sea creatures by the shore such as whales, jellyfish, anchovies etc. Their answer was, because this year there is more nutrients, more food and obviously these creatures are following the food.

They classify years by “Año niña fenomeno and Año niño fenomeno”, which means that Año niño fenomeno carries warm currents and Año niña carries cold currents. This year is a normal year; it is a season of upwellings. They mentioned that there will probably be even more new species due to the changes of the climate. That at some point this was going to happen due to the global warming. So we will be seeing more species that haven’t been seen here in the area of Rocky Point. This is certainly interesting, and we will keep you updated on these new coming species.
