You will need a fishing license to participate in Mexico’s fishing tournaments, but you needn’t be a Mexican citizen to participate in the competition. The Sea of Cortez has much to offer the serious angler, with 875 species of fish, including a large number of game fish like snapper, yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, marlin, dorado, sailfish, skipjack, and wahoo.
The San Carlos Yacht Club Rescate Fishing Tournament in March offers a lone angler the chance to win up to $2,000 USD in prize money. The entry fee is $150 per angler, with no additional boat fees. Each day, $500 is given to the first billfish hook-up and release, as well as the largest dorado, yellowfin tuna, or wahoo weighing 12 pounds or more. In 2016, 19 boats competed, with most boats catching dorado to eat, including a few 25-pound fish. The grand prize winner pulled off a close victory with 25 releases.
The Ladies International Fishing Tournament, taking place at the end of May, is one of the longest-running annual fishing tournaments – celebrating its 25th year in 2018. The entry fee is $60, which includes the awards dinner and a gift. It’s not uncommon to see close to 20 boats and 35 anglers out on the water catching two dozen marlin and sailfish for release.
The March Yellowtail Spearfishing Tournament offers a unique way of catching fish by putting your free diving skills to the test. The $50 entry includes a tournament rash guard and a raffle ticket chance to win thousands of prizes. The weigh-in party takes place at Hammerhead’s Dockside Bar & Grille.
The San Carlos Golf and Country Club is widely considered one of the best golf courses in all of Mexico. Not only was the 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Roy Dye, son of the legendary Pete Dye, but the greens are also surrounded by an impressive view of pink-hued mountains and the Sea of Cortez. The Olympic-size swimming pool, outdoor patios, pro shop, and restaurants add to the ambiance. Not surprisingly, a number of annual golf tournaments take place here during the high tourism season, including:
You’ll find San Carlos, Mexico is a very music-oriented town. Most of the best restaurants – like Delfines, La Palapa Griega, the Soggy Peso, and La Salsa Beach Bar — serve up live Latin music with their meals. Christmas and Eastertime bring a number of concerts to local houses of worship like San Carlos Borromeo Church, San Carlos United Methodist, and San Carlos Cathedral. You can often find fundraisers featuring live music like the Yappa Tapa Party with Angel Perez in concert to benefit San Carlos Pet Adoption or the Concert, Wine & Cheese Benefit for La Manga Kids Activity Program. Auditorio Fray Ivo Toneck and the Guayamas Malecon boardwalk are two places that frequently hold concerts.
In addition to regular concerts, there are several music festivals to look out for:
