If you’re an angler, chances are good that you’ve already heard about San Carlos, Mexico. Fishing is one of the major attractions, in great part due to its location on the Sea of Cortez. Once famously referred to as the “world’s aquarium” by the renowned wildlife explorer Jacques Cousteau, the Sea of Cortez, and by association San Carlos, is host to a variety of different species of fish. For this reason, the sport is a major draw for both casual and serious fishermen, regardless of the time of year.
When to Go
People who enjoy fishing will find a number of opportunities both off-shore and near the shore, although the season often dictates the best type of fish and fishing location. During the summer months, for example, the waters in San Carlos naturally become warmer. As a result, big-game fish including mahi-mahi, marlin, yellowfin tuna, and sailfish are the focus of anglers vacationing in the area from the months of June to October. Big-game fishing occurs off-shore, which means vacationers will need to charter or rent a boat.
Bottom-fishing occurs throughout the year and is most popular during the fall to spring months. Unlike off-shore fishing, this allows for on-shore fishing, or you can choose to rent a boat for the day and fish near the shore. The types of fish you’ll find when bottom-fishing in San Carlos include sea bass, sea trout, grouper, and red snapper, just to name a few. One of the most popular fish during this time is the yellowtail tuna, which is abundant in the area, particularly as it nears Isla San Pedro and San Antonio Point.
Competition and Tournament Fishing
There are several different tournaments that take place in San Carlos. In March is the San Carlos Yellowtail Fishing Tournament. In the month of May, typically on Memorial Day weekend, there is LIFT, or the Ladies International Fishing Tournament. June brings the San Carlos Yacht Club and Rescate de San Carlos tournament, and a month later comes the International Billfish Tournament. Travel to San Carlos for Labor Day and you’ll be just in time for the San Carlos Labor Day Fishing Tournament, and stay until October for the Cantina Cup.
