Tetakawi Mountain

Part of what makes San Carlos, Mexico, stand out as a vacation destination is its incredible scenery. It is commonly compared to Sedona, Arizona. Around the Bay of San Carlos, low mountains break away from the nearby Sierra Madre Mountains to create a jumbled landscape that tumbles into the Sea of Cortez. The centerpiece of this environment is Mount Tetakawi.

The History of Mount Tetakawi

This mountain climbs to a height of 200 meters above sea level. Many Indian tribes in the area of San Carlos, such as the Seri and Yaqui, consider the mountain to be sacred. They also believe it has mystical powers of healing.

Over the centuries, the unique formations of this mountain have earned it many names, including Tecalai, which translates to “dragon’s tongue.” The Spanish referred to it as Tetas de Cabra. It has also been called Stone Mountain by the Seri Indians. But regardless of the name, this mountain is an unforgettable sight.

These days, the mountain is at the center of San Carlos. Beautiful homes lie at its base, and the modern marina is nearby, too. Beaches and coves ring the mountain where it meets the sea, creating beautiful fishing, swimming, and kayaking spots.

Accessing the Mountain

For those who accept the challenge, Tetakawi can be hiked. The trail up takes a little effort to stay on track, but it is marked in places. In many spots, the trail covers loose fields of rock, requiring that hikers take their time and pay attention. The reward, of course, is the best view in town and one that few get to see.

Mount Tetakawi and nearby Caon Nacapule are part of what makes San Carlos a great, compact vacation destination ideal for eco-tourists. Outdoor adventurers recently walked a tightrope between the mountain’s two peaks! As the emphasis in travel turns more and more to eco-tourism, look for San Carlos to play a larger role. The slopes of Tetakawi are a rich example of the Sonoran Desert landscape, with the northernmost examples of the tropical environment of southern Mexico nearby. This meeting of environments creates a unique and lively natural world.

People traveling to Mexico on business, for a wedding, for a class reunion, or just for a fun vacation are sure to remember the first time they look up and catch a glimpse of Mount Tetakawi.
