The San Carlos airport is actually located in neighboring Guaymas, and its full name is the General Jose Maria Yanez International Airport. Its airport code is GYM. Flights to San Carlos, Mexico, can be a part of your itinerary for traveling to San Carlos, but this is not normally the most direct route for a couple of reasons.

Unlike in years past, there are no U.S. airlines that have a direct route to GYM. Two Mexican national airlines do service the Guaymas/San Carlos airport, Aero Calafia and Aero Servicio Guerrero. Calafia also has a route to Hermosillo, the state of Sonora’s capital. U.S.-based American Airlines flies into Hermosillo, so it is possible to make a connection there. The flight schedules are not coordinated, however, so the wait between flights in Hermosillo (HMO) could be long.

Most travelers coming to San Carlos are departing from the western United States or western Canada. Connections into Hermosillo on U.S. airlines servicing this part of the country are usually through Mexico City, meaning that the journey for those flying into San Carlos is likely to consist of a minimum of three legs.

With all of that in mind, most travelers currently find other means of travel to reach San Carlos. Those who do fly as far as Hermosillo, about 75 miles from San Carlos, often rent a car or take one of the numerous public buses that make the trip between the two places daily. Most vacationers who arrive in San Carlos, however, drive from the border, a seven-hour trip by road. Driving to San Carlo/Guaymas is relatively easy on well-maintained toll roads. Most of the state of Sonora until just past San Carlos is considered a “free zone” for foreign drivers from the United States: No special car permits are needed to enter or leave the state if you are only driving within the area of the free zone.

If you’d rather not drive, there is also regular bus service offered out of Tucson several times a day, which makes for an economical option. Private pilots also regularly make the flight into GYM, and some find it a pleasant, no-hassle experience.
