Framed by lush islands, brackish estuaries and reefs, Rocky Point boasts exceptional fishing year-round in its mostly shallow waters. The rocky coves and reefs in places like Cholla Bay are great for bottom fishing for leopard grouper, yellow tail, mackerel, sea bass, flounder and red snapper. Fishing from the deck of a kayak or armed only with flippers and a spear gun can put you eye-to-eye with your catch. The mouth of the estuary east of town is another productive fishing spot, with its mix of fresh and salt waters. You can cast a line in one of many fishing spots near the Malecon in Penasco, or rent a panga (a traditional small boat used by local fisherman) to bottom fish the coves and rocky outcroppings of this beautiful, coastal hamlet.
If you are planning on fishing from the shore, remember to keep tabs on the tides. Generally speaking, shore casting in Rocky Point is best right at the change from high to low tide, or vice versa, when the water fluctuations are greatest.
Bottom fishing from the shore can be terrific fun, but if deep sea fishing Rocky Point is on your agenda, there are plenty of boat charters offering half and full day fishing trips further afield (30-40 miles) on the Sea of Cortez. Local captains offer years of boating experience and a passion for landing big game fish including marlin, Dorado (mahi mahi), and sailfish.
Rocky Point fishing charters can be reserved for inshore and offshore excursions, which typically include:
Some of the most well-established crews offering to take you out are Pancho Villa Boat Charters, Del Mar Charters, and Santiago’s Ocean Services. Along with deep sea fishing, these boats also offer whale-watching, sunset cruises, and Bird Island trips. Charter boats– ranging from 26 feet to 57 feet –are state-of the art and equipped with GPS, satellite radio, outriggers, bait tanks, restrooms and shade decks.
Most half-day fishing charters run from 8:00 am – 2:30 pm, while full-day trips go until 5:00 pm.
Spring and summer are prime months for landing halibut, snapper, whitefish, black sea bass , goldspotted bass and trigger fish from the shores, docks and piers of Rocky Point. Deep sea fishing peaks from June through October, when marlin, billfish and Dorado are more prevalent.
