  • Projects around Rocky Point; how are they coming along?

    May 24, 2016

If you have been a Rocky Point regular for a few years, you have no doubt noticed that there is always some kind of project going on. In the ‘old days’ it was all about building condos at a breakneck pace. Nowadays, you can always find a road or something else being improved.

We looked at the second Wind Turbine going in just across the road from the first one, on the way out towards Laguna Shores. The base is still being constructed, and there is as of yet no word on a completion date.

The Federally backed Home Port project out at the Reef has seen a pause in activity. The Jetty that is there tells a story of a lot of work having been done. The current hiatus in progress is due to auditing the use of existing funds, before releasing more allocated Pesos. Danged accountants! The support at the National level speaks well to the feeling of confidence about follow through on the Home Port, meant to be the point of embarkation for cruise ships exploring the Sea of Cortez.

A partnership between Levi Strauss (the Jeans people), the Mayor’s Office, and Uncle Skate.org is showing signs of progress on the world classs skate park going in near the entrance to the public beach. Uncle Skate, a group that works to give skate boards to poor kids (I know, what a great idea!) was here in March breaking ground with Mayor Ernesto ‘Kiko’ Munro, shooting a promo video, and generally exciting the small but rapidly fanatic boarders of Puerto Peñasco.

Just about a week ago, a work crew started putting in the median for Freemont Blvd. where it exits town to the East. Take a look; electric lines have gone in, light post are up all the way to the Las Conchas Oxxo, and curbs are in place. Not ready yet to pave, part of the road is still at the mercy of winds off the ocean. Meaning that running a Cat over it makes for 24 hours of good dirt road, followed by a few days that generate business for local dentists.

    new lights

The street lights on Freemont, or Las Conchas Blvd, are part of 8 thousand lights the city is currently installing around town. This is expected to improve illumination for 85% of the town, so it really is a big deal.

But the progress is real and welcome, and in two to three months we should have a smooth drive through this part of town, Just be sure to stop for the guys selling honey and firewood. Did you now that is ‘almost free’?
