Bars, Clubs, and Nightlife in Rocky Point

It can be hard to find the motivation to hit the town when you’re lounging in the swim-up bar of your ocean view rental as the sun melts into the sea like a giant pat of butter. However, for those of you who won’t be satisfied until you’ve wrung every last drop of fun out of a vacation in Puerto Peñasco, here’s a definitive guide to Rocky Point bars and nightlife.

Rocky Point Bars

Rocky Point Bars

Whether you’re into sunset cocktails with friends, hip lounges with house music, or Jello shots and bar top dancing, these popular cantinas, nightclubs and watering holes are your ticket to after-hours revelry in Rocky Point.

The Malecon

From its humble beginnings as a row of fresh fish markets, the Malecon is now the city’s big outdoor gathering place on any given weekend. Brimming with more than 20 different restaurants, bars and outdoor cafes, this waterfront district is frequented by tourists and locals alike.  On summer evenings, this is a great spot to catch a cool breeze, enjoy live music (cumbia, mariachi and the like), frosty piña coladas and delicious eats like fresh corn grilled with chile, butter and lime. Driving in, you will find seafood restaurants perched above the fish market stalls and lots of tiny kiosks selling cheap souvenirs. This is the world capitol of five-dollar sunglasses and shot glasses shaped like cactus.

Pool Bars in Rocky Point

Sandy Beach is where the majority of Rocky Point resorts are centered, and some of these hotels feature inviting pool bars that serve up delicious mojitos, fresh margaritas and other beachy drinks. Some pools are even off-limits for kids, and cater solely to adults who want to party! Rocky Point also boasts a number of sports bars with pool tables, like the Baja Cantina Hotel, a Spring Break hotspot loved for its swim-up Palapa bar, killer ocean views and walking distance to taco stands and popular clubs.

Wrecked at the Reef

Out at the far end of Sandy Beach, past the developments and on the road to Cholla Bay, you will find Wrecked at the Reef. Probably known by more vacationers than any other place in town, Wrecked is big and casual. The outdoor patio slopes down toward the waves, making it a great spot to enjoy a late snack from the kitchen. It’s furnished with lots of big screen TVs inside, a dance floor, and live music Fridays and Saturdays. For five years, the band has been La Merca, and they are a group with no pretenses: They are here to make you dance!

Banditos

In front of the Sonoran Sea and Spa Resorts is a two-story thatched-roof bar with what looks like an old Greyhound bus parked around the side. Retired after many miles of service, this is Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers’ old tour bus. It’s here because this is the musician’s home base in Mexico. Banditos is the best Rocky Point bar for live music, Mexican moonshine margaritas, and dancing to the classic rock of Riband. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 3-6, with $3 well drinks and $2 bottled beer.

Uno Mas at Las Palmas

Around the corner from Banditos, Uno Mas is tucked inside the luxurious Las Palmas Resort. A beautiful and intimate Palapa bar, this place is a little hideaway for those who know about it. On weekends, your bartender and host, Ricardo Rivera, will probably grab his electric guitar and belt out some Eric Clapton and Bob Marley tunes. Open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, this popular watering hole is perfect for taking in a basketball game on big-screen TVs or simply kicking back with a cocktail by the resort’s main pool.

Calle 13

Calle 13 (pronounced “kye-yay tray-say“) means 13th Street in Spanish. Here you will find taco stands, a happening bar or three, and some adult entertainment “clubs.” There are myriad ways to have fun on Calle 13, though October’s Rocky Point Rally biker festival is an annual highlight. During the event, Calle 13 will be packed, leaving just enough room for a constant stream of bikes right down the center. Up by Hotel Peñasco del Sol, you will find Southside Jillz, painted can’t-miss-it bright blue. Jillz has nice pool tables, a patio with horseshoes and barbecue, as well as live music.

JJ’s Cantina

Situated in the Cholla Bay area of town, JJ’s Cantina is a landmark among Rocky Point bars, and has been luring thirsty travelers for decades. This “third-world cantina” is a fun meeting spot for drinks, amazing chimichangas and fish tacos as well as sunset cocktails.  Boasting gorgeous bay views, this iconic bar has tons of crazy events, including fishing derbies, chili cook-offs, sailboat and bath tub races, as well as live concerts by Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers.

Boo Bar

Squeezed between two upstairs restaurants is the Boo Bar. A lot of people consider this their one special cantina in Mexico for good reason. The bar stools are actually swings, a huge patio overlooks the Sea of Cortez and the ambiance is downright fun, especially when the booze is flowing. Come for the cheap drinks (best margaritas in town), spectacular views, fun staff, and live rock music from the Boo Boys Band.

Rocky Point Clubs

Rocky Point has some of the most exciting and exotic night clubs in the world and is a great place for a party with a view! Check out some of the great nightclubs in Rocky Point on your next seaside vacation! Here are a few clubs we think are worth a look:

Sky Bar

At the top of the black rock mountain above the Malecon, you will find Sky Bar. An unassuming place perched atop the Fish Restaurant (one of the best eateries in Rocky Point if you’re hankering for the day’s fresh catch), Sky has the very best view of any bar in town. Go for the sunsets, but stay for Ladies Night specials (every Friday), when Sky features $1 well drinks from 9 pm to 11 pm. This chic rooftop lounge has everything from electronic house music to live performances by local guitarists.

Elixir Bar & Lounge

Elixir is one of the trendiest nightclubs in Rocky Point, featuring a cool lounge atmosphere. DJ talent keeps the dance floor busy on Thursday and Saturday nights, and Fridays you can get your groove on to Latin jazz and salsa courtesy of Agua de Coco – a popular local band.  With its multiple dance floors, open air patio and upscale party atmosphere, Elixir Bar & Lounge is the place to see and be seen in Rocky Point.
